For many years, we have been taught to think about travel in terms of movement. Where are you going? What will you see? How many activities can fit into the itinerary? I have come to appreciate another kind of journey: travel as retreat.

Sometimes we need less

There are seasons when you don’t need ten activities. You need quiet, a comfortable bed, a view that makes you pause and good food. Perhaps you need a swimming pool, a garden, the ocean or somewhere to walk without being required to answer anyone.

Sometimes you simply need space. A change of environment doesn’t remove our responsibilities or solve every difficulty waiting at home. It can, however, give us room to think differently.

What a place can give us

Nature can slow us down. The ocean can hold our attention without demanding anything from us. Birds make us look upwards; a sunrise reminds us that another day has begun.

An open landscape can make problems that felt enormous seem part of a much bigger world. That is one reason I believe tourism should make room for rest and restoration. Not every traveller is looking for adrenaline. Some are tired, some have spent months caring for everyone else, and some simply want silence.

Ask a different question

A good travel professional should recognise those needs. The question shouldn’t always be how much we can fit into a holiday. Sometimes the better question is: how do you want to feel when you return home?

That question changes the itinerary. We might choose fewer transfers, stay an extra night or select a lodge surrounded by nature. We might leave an afternoon free, or give a traveller a morning without an alarm. Small decisions can change the whole experience.

The luxury of becoming still

Beautiful journeys do not always need to be busy journeys. Travel can be exploration, celebration or adventure. At other times, its greatest luxury is the freedom to become still.

I am increasingly drawn to that understanding of travel. There are moments in life when the destination we need most is a place where we can breathe again.
