People often speak about Swakopmund and Walvis Bay together. They are close to one another, both sit along Namibia’s Atlantic coastline, and many travellers visit them on the same journey. But I don’t experience them as the same destination. Each has its own rhythm.
Swakopmund invites you to wander
There is something about waking up near the ocean, stepping into the cool coastal air and knowing you do not necessarily need to rush anywhere. There are cafés, restaurants, shops, architecture, adventure activities and places where you can simply sit.
Only a short distance away, there is desert. That contrast continues to fascinate me. One moment you are enjoying the atmosphere of a coastal town; the next, you can be surrounded by landscapes where the sand seems to continue forever.
Walvis Bay turns your attention to the water
In Walvis Bay, my attention naturally moves towards the water and wildlife. The lagoon, birdlife, marine environment and catamaran experiences introduce travellers to another side of Namibia.
Then there is the meeting of dunes and ocean that makes this stretch of coast so memorable. It offers a different perspective from the town streets and cafés, and another reason to give the coast time in an itinerary.

Make room for both
I wouldn’t ask a traveller to choose between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay too quickly. Experience both. Have the adventure, go onto the Atlantic, watch the birds, eat good food, walk and take photographs.
But leave some empty space too. Sit somewhere without needing to do anything. Watch the ocean. Travel doesn’t have to entertain us every minute. Sometimes a destination gives us something because we have allowed ourselves enough time to be present.
The coast offers space as well as adventure
Perhaps that is what I love most about the Namibian coast. You can find adventure here, certainly. You can also find space.
Depending on the season of life you are travelling through, that space might be exactly what you came looking for.
