Building a business again brings a different perspective. The ambition is still there, but experience changes the risks you notice and the questions you ask. My first business chapter was in Uganda. In Namibia, through Cherut Travel & Safaris, I am applying those lessons to a new chapter.
A stronger foundation
Earlier experience taught me to look beyond the next sale. I now pay closer attention to the processes supporting the company: how bookings are managed, payments authorised, expenses recorded and responsibilities assigned.
A business should be able to operate beyond the memory and energy of its founder. Documented ways of working help make that possible and give people a clearer understanding of what is expected.
Understand the business behind the revenue
A busy company is not automatically a healthy one. Money moving through the business does not tell the full story of cash flow, margins or the commitments still to be met.
Financial discipline means knowing where money comes from, where it goes and who is responsible for decisions about it. Those details deserve attention even when the visible business appears to be growing.
Build a team with purpose
Hiring people and building a team are different tasks. Roles, reporting lines and expectations need to fit the organisation we are trying to create. Talented people can struggle inside a structure that leaves their responsibilities unclear.
Governance and advice also matter before a company becomes large. Documented decisions, professional reporting and people willing to challenge the founder can help identify weaknesses early.
Carry experience forward
Mentorship has helped me recognise that founding a business does not mean knowing everything needed to develop it. Other people’s expertise can make me better equipped to lead.
I remain ambitious for Cherut. I want it to become a stronger company, with sound operations and meaningful regional and international relationships. Starting again brings lessons and experience with it; the work is to use them thoughtfully.
